The book itself was well written and the story intriguing. All was not rosy at Gloriavale yet all was not terrible either. That being said, to have come out of that and become a self professed whiskey drinker who lives tight jeans, high heels, rap music, happy to have lost her virginity prior to marriage and puts Oprah on a pedestal and is an agnostic, I'm not so sure her life was better "outside". Yes I am a conservative Christian and no I don't believe any type of real abuse is ever ok. I'm just saying that sometimes you jump from the frying pan into the fire and don't even realize it.....
I preordered this book very excited to connect with the experiences of the author having had somewhat similar life experiences, but however helpful emotionally this book may have been to write, it lacks depth, humanity and honesty about the morphosis of the mind and heart. I wish she’d spent far more time on her transition experience and less on recounting point by point stories of her teens in an attempt seemingly to convince us of the extreme nature of the sub culture.
Extremely interesting read and what a sad life for the others in that community. A whole world out there waiting to be explored as Lilia has now found out. Can't understand what all this brain washing hopes to achieve.
if anyone thinks we should leave Gloriavale along to get on with themselves in private should read this book.I was amazed the whole family managed to escape and I’m glad she was not forced into marriage.
Excellent all the way through. Couldn't put down . Congratulations Lilia. The documentary was whitewashed, interesting but felt very sad.
Such a good read, well told story. I had to remember it was true, not fiction as it was so hard to believe a man could have such twisted power over a whole community. So glad she broke free and found herself and voice.
Hard to put down - a very interesting insight into a religious cult operating in New Zealand. The author gives a fair and honest view of the life she was born into - an excellent read.
Very good read. I hope more people escape and are able to find themselves. They seem to be a close knit community but at the same time they are very controlled by Neville and his leaders.
