I really love this book. It was awesome. It was a very interesting book and I learned a few things from it. I learned 2 new heart rhythms: Sinus arrhythmia and a rare rhythm called torsades de pointed: abnormal beat of the ventricles that produces a rhythm at first looks like ventricular tachycardia, but isn't. The treatment for it is magnesium and ventricular pacing. If you give the person lidocaine while they're in this rhythm, it will kill them. I also learned that there are 24 drugs that medics use to help bring patients back to life. I thought it was half that number. I'm familiar to most of them from my nursing math course I took. I really loved this book. I'll definitely recommend it all of my friends in the field.

Really interesting first hand account of people sent to save those in extreme distress, as well as serve the leeches in society who take advantage of social services. Canning is quite candid and honest about his insecurities, mistakes and shortcomings as a human being trained essentially to be a doctor, nurse and social worker.

This book inspired me to enroll into EMT school and it prepared for my clinicals (I knew that not every 911 call was going to be a true emergency). Many lay people see the ambulance rushing through traffic, and say to themselves, "Man, those guys must have nothing but action-packed days!). Not so! If you're an EMT student, EMS provider or someone with education in the EMS field, you'll pick up the terminology in the book and you'll have fun reading the book. General public will have a hard time understanding the vital signs/terminology, but still very interesting to read. This is an excellent book for those who are interested in getting into the field. Highly recommend this to EMT students, it will greatly inspire you and will make you a bit more street wise when your clinicals come up.

A good read for both EMT and Paramedics. Deals with the many physical and mental challenges of EMS. The book is broken down into small sections/chapters which I like as I cannot read for long periods of time. I look forward to reading some more of Peter Cannings books.

I got this book because I was (still am) interested in going into EMS. I wanted to see what it's like being a paramedic. This book talks about what he did on the job... The only thing that I don't like about this book is that he talks a lot about his previous job, which has a lot to do with politics.. and I don't like politics xDBut overall, this book is a good read. It goes into detail about being a paramedic, and about the different emotions he encounters treating his patients.

The book is fun to read and has given me insight into my brother's career as a paramedic. The author tries to give you an idea of what it's like to be a paramedic by relating his anecdotes, stories, and his thoughts over the span of his career. I definitely enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about what paramedics do. The only thing that irritated me about the book is that it jumps around a lot. There is no real story line and some of the anecdotes seem a little overly dramatic sometimes. Still, the good far outweighs the bad.

This book is amazing. Getting into te ems field I really wanted something to prepare me for what I might face just to get a good idea, this book helped. It gave some of the lingo emt personnel use with each other as well as the basics of what happened day to day.

I'm a U.S. Army Combat Medic so I have my EMT Basic certification and bought this book to help me decide if I want to further my EMS education when I get out of the military. I still haven't finished it but I wasn't even halfway through the book when I decided I need to do this for a living. It's the good, bad, and ugly of being a Paramedic. I would give it 5 stars but there's a noticeable amount of typos in the book. For example, twice on the same page the word "die" was replaced with "the". Not a big deal because the context of the sentence makes the word that's supposed to be there obvious but it's kinda annoying. Buy this book if you think you might want to pursue a career in emergency medicine because by the time you're done you'll have made your decision. That's all I got

I received my copy of this fantastic text three days ago; then I put all my attention to scam it. I'm a disciple of Dr. Ghaemi philosophy and viewpoints since my early years of residency until now. Every piece of thought written by him embraces the "humanistic psychiatry" approach. This is not a classical Psychopharmacology text, like those of Dr. Stahl. The text is aimed at curbing the "neuromythology" of following theoretical knowledge for caring of patients without valid clinical evidence. It challenges the common "Galenic" approach of relying on neurotransmitter changes and promote the "Hippocratic" approach to treat only identified diseases and give symptoms watchful care without harm. The text presents a philosophy for the humanistic mental health care more than presenting drug info. Dr. Ghaemi has put a lot of his personal experience tips on managing adverse drug problems. I think this text is complimentary and augmenting other classical neuroscientific books of Psychopharmacology. Whatever the drug x is changing they neurotransmitter or modulating the z receptor, don't rely on this without valid clinical data from controlled trials. This is the bottom line of the text.

I am going to school to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. The Stahl Books were used as our textbooks, but I wanted another viewpoint. This book is new so it has up-to-date Information on new series and new drugs. The Author puts forward some very interesting information about all matters regarding treating mental health issues. As a student I love this book because it makes me think about things in a different way and provide so much information. Neuroanatomy and neurobiology can be challenging for me,but this doctor/author writes well and explains things in a way that I can understand! Highly recommended for those becoming PMHNPs.

Dr. Ghaemi is brilliant, honest and science based. Psychiatry has suffered at the hands of the DSM. We are the only medical profession that treats "Disorders" vs "Disease". Symptom prescribing is non-scientific and dangerous. Dr. Ghaemi's Psychopharm. book is a beautiful guide to science based prescribing.

Really did learn a lot about bipolar disorder and how to better treat it.

During my childhood, I was told nothing about my father's covert wartime exerience. He was just a typical dad. In 2006 when he was 86 years old, I decided to ask him about his wartime exploits. He told me the stories I expected, about piloting heavy bombers over Germany. But then he slipped and mentioned his depression about Russia, and a mission for the OSS. Suddenly he became someone I hardly knew. At first I was unsure what to make of it. Could such an incredible story really be true? After his death, I began to look into the story, beginning an in-depth research project. I uncovered supporting documentary evidence which proved that Captain Trimble's story was true in every detail.

A stunning story about the Cold War that actually began before the end of WWII.USAAF forces, in support of the Red Army advance westward into Poland and Germany, began using "shuttle" missions by their B-24 and B-17 bombers- launch from bases in Britain, France and Italy, strike targets in the eastern areas of the Reich, and continue on to Red Army held territory (as they did not have the range to return to their bases). There, they would re-fuel and re-arm, and strike targets on their way back.Naturally, a number of aircraft were forced to crash-land in territory held by the Soviets, and the USAAF was anxious to get their planes and crews back- and they applied for permission to recover said aircraft.Enter Captain Robert Trimble, newly minted member of the "Lucky Bastards Club", the select few who had managed to complete the required 35 missions over enemy territory before being rotated home. Trimble was called to his CO's office and offered a choice- go home for a three week leave, and then possibly be re-assigned to a new set of combat missions (maybe in the Pacific), or agree to a "safer" aircraft recovery mission in the Eastern European Theater with the willing help of the Communists. Trimble's experience of combat missions flying both B-17s AND B-24s gave him a rather unique set of qualifications- and he was rated one of his squadron's best officers, as well.He began to notice odd things as he began to train for his new mission, not the least of which was the involvement of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He was to discover that his mission was not only to recover downed US aircraft, he was also to try to repatriate Axis held POWs who had been "liberated" by the Russians. Aircrews who had managed to evade capture by the Germans were treated as heroes by the Reds, but those taken prisoner were considered to be cowards, and abandoned after the POW camps were captured.The Russians performed mass executions of their own people who had been captured by the Nazis, and actively interfered with attempts by the Western Allies to recover theirs. Trimble's assignment was to outfox the Soviets and bring our people home, and in the process freed many more- other allied military, and hundreds of slave workers transported from their native countries to perform duties in the Nazi labor camps.This story is much more than the recollections of one man- it is meticulously researched- many military archives were investigated, and all of Trimble's verifiable details have proven accurate.It is a tale of derring-do, of the nasty politics at work between the "Allies", outright lies, deceits, and obstruction on the part of "Uncle Joe" Stalin, and the bravery and ingenuity of American and other freedom-minded people in a terrible time and place.I cannot recommend this book highly enough- five stars seems inadequate- this story must be known. It screams out for a legitimate historical movie or mini-series ala "Band of Brothers".One more note: I have been a fan of the movie "Patton", starring George C. Scott, for many years. This book illustrates a major failing of that tale. There is a point in the movie where Patton laments his inability to start a new war with the Russians to his friend Omar Bradley, and it is treated as a humorous, insane side-note to General Patton's career. It turns out that General Patton knew full well about the treatment of American POWs in Soviet held territory- treatment that would have been considered an act of war under any other circumstances. I was born in October,1945 and as such consider myself "one lucky bastard" in that freedom was my first gift after life itself. After a 20 plus career with the NYPD, I have spent the last 28 years teaching fifth grade, and you better believe that I will introduce my students to the heroic exploits of Capt. Robert Tillman. His story has strengthened my own idea of the greatness of that generation, and of the men and women who suffered in so many countries throughout the world. My own daughter-in-law's grandfather "opened up" about the European theater in my classroom, but informed the students that he could not talk about his liberation of an "unnamed" camp, In closing, I was riveted by Capt. Trimble's story and could feel his fear, anguish, and frustration during those "4" months in hell. I found it particularly ironic that I began the book 70 years to the day in February, 1945 as his journey was initiated.This is a must read for all citizens, who think that they have something to complain about!George M.

2nd book I've read recently by a child of someone who served in WW2 and wanted to tell their parent's story. Well done!Reading how that bastard Stalin and the evil empire, treated Poland, American POWs, and even their own people raised my blood pressure. And how we, the USA, felt it necessary to appease those bastards.People like Captain Trimble and so many others from all countries fought (and continue to fight) to do right by people, to treat them humanely, and to deliver some hope to this world.I applaud the guts and heart of Captain Trimble and the effort and skill of his son in telling his story.

This is a story in the Second World War that needed to be told. We were told that the Russians were our "Allies" during WWII in the fight against the Axis Powers. Alas, it wasn't true. This is the accounting of a man that was tricked into thinking he was just going to be picking up broken airplanes and he not only did what was actually requested of him but went above and beyond. We are so fortunate to live in the time of peace that we do, for the men and women who fought in the Second World War they didn't have this luxury, evil and conceit was ever present and this Airman saw through it all. I was haunted by the account of the P51 pilot who to this day lays in an unmarked grave killed by Russians so they could steal his airplane to study the technology. With the story of that loss comes also many successful missions that saved hundreds of people from certain death.

This is a part of WW2 I had no idea ever took place! Well written and very interesting. A must have for WW2 buffs. Makes you wonder if the Russians really were on our side or not. What a bunch of paranoid jack asses. I guess life was pretty cheap for the commies back then. The hardships suffered by so many in Eastern Europe is beyond imagination. Some very brave American Airmen did all they could to rescue downed American pilots. A must read and I really enjoyed it.

This book tells a haunting and dramatic real life story that will stay with me a long time. It gives at least a small idea of what it was like to be Capt. Trimble, caught between the human suffering on the eastern front (as the Nazi's withdrew and the Soviets advanced) and the big power politics that hindered every effort to relieve that suffering next to impossible. My only slight complaint is that the writing seems to me to be a little melodramatic, when just the facts are enough to move the reader. Still, I recommend this book, both for history buffs and for anyone who wants a glimpse of the realities of the tradgedy of the countless POWs, civilians and concentration camp survivors, displaced by WWII.

I recently purchased this book but it was not what I thought. This book is a practice manual but when I ordered it the display stated that it was a textbook.

This book is a classic example of the cliche "those that can't do, teach" (which by the way I don't usually agree with) . I doubt that Mr. Kicklighter has ever held a trowel in his hand. Lots of information, only some of it accurate.

Paul Kennedy is internationally known for his writings and commentaries on global political, economic, and strategic issues. He earned his B.A. at Newcastle University and his doctorate at the University of Oxford. Since 1983, he has been the Dilworth Professor of History and director of international security studies at Yale University. He is on the editorial board of numerous scholarly journals and writes for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, and many foreign-language newspapers and magazines. Kennedy is the author and editor of nineteen books, including The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, which has been translated into more than twenty languages, followed by Preparing for the Twenty-first Century (1993), and The Parliament of Man (2006).

Having read a great many books of the role of technology in the Second World War I looked forward to reading this book, thinking it would add detail to that covered by excellent books like R. V. Jones' "The Wizard War," in which he described projects he worked on during the war under the auspices of the Tizard Committee, or Robert Burden's history of radar, "The Invention That Changed the World." But despite the subtitle of this book, "The problem solver who turned the tide in the Second World War," there is little or nothing on the men and women who were responsible for the great technological inventions like radar, radio navigation, landing craft and so on. In fact, much of the narrative has nothing whatsoever to do with engineering and technology, and is instead about how various political, tactical, and strategic decisions affected the outcome of the war.Where Kennedy does get into the details of the machinery of war or its creators he gets much of it wrong, like referring to legendary Supermarine Spitfire designer R. J. Mitchell as "J. R. Mitchell." It's hard to imagine how a mistake like this made it into print. In the section on the battle for the Atlantic, he states that antisubmarine rockets SQUID and LIMBO could actively search for their targets, which is not true (they were time fused) and that SQUID is still used "in vastly improved form in today's navies" which is certainly not true as SQUID was replaced by the active seeking Mk44 torpedo twenty years ago.Kennedy also suggests that the Rolls Royce Merlin engine was a copy of the Curtis D-12 (which he calls the Curtis V-12) and that Rolls Royce imported the engines to copy them. Actually the engines were imported by Fairey, later well known as the builders of the Swordfish Biplane. Regardless, the Merlin is not a copy of the D-12 but rather a much more advanced engine that was in part influenced by the D-12, as were many other European aircraft engines. He then tells a story of how an RAF test pilot suggested that the P-51 would be improved by the substitution of a Merlin engine, after which clever RAF mechanics slipped one in, the engine compartment of the P-51 coincidentally being just the right size for the Merlin. But as Peter Pugh's history of the company, "Rolls Royce: The Magic of a Name" points out, there's a good reason the Merln fit in the P-51. The Ircraft had already been tested with both the Packard and Merlin engines at Wright Field, long before any aircraft reached England. The US Army initially chose the Packard in order to simplify the supply chain but quickly came around to the choice of the supercharged Merlin once the RAF showed its superiority.In his chapter on amphibious assault, Kennedy states that the "Cockleshell Heroes" arrived at Gironde in midget submarines. What he's referring to is Operation Frankton,in which commandos were delivered offshore via submarine (not a midget submarines) and paddled folding canoes (nicknamed "cockles") into the Gironde estuary. "Cockleshell Heroes" was the name of a movie about this raid. When he finally gets around to discussing technology, Kennedy does manage to devote a few paragraphs to the specialized mine clearing and bridging tanks known as "Hobart's funnies" but never touches on the most important technological innovation of the invasions, the specialized landing craft used to deliver men and machinery to the beaches. Whole volumes have been written about the role played by these craft but they seem to have escaped the author's notice. (The Higgins boat get a one sentence reference in a later chapter.) Neither is their any mention of PLUTO, the cross-channel pipeline developed to supply the invading force with fuel. Kennedy does mention the Mullberries, the artificial harbors towed across the channel, but than says they were erected by Seabees, which is incorrect, as others note.A great many critically important scientific and engineering advances never get mentioned at all. Kennedy credits allied success in the Battle of the Phillipine Sea (aka the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot) to US aircraft superiority, but an even more important factor was the combination of radar guided antiaircraft guns firing shells equipped with radar proximity fuzes that protected the Allied ships and allowed for unprecedented success in shooting down attacking aircraft. Those same proximity fuzes were a massive force multiplier in the European theater, making US artillery far more effective than German artillery, which was impact fused, but no mention is made of this, either.There is much in the book that is both accurate and interesting, but unfortunately ths is outweighed by the scores of historic and technological errors and omissions that abound. Add to that the fact that it doesn't actually live up to its title and discuss the technology that contributed to victory or those engineers behind the technology, and I cannot by any means recommend this book. Instead, I recommend that readers interested in the technological history of WWII start with the two books I referenced in the first paragraph, Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and go on from there.

While Professor Kennedy professes to focus on the men–in-the-middle and engineering, too much actually focuses on the strategy, his true love. I also think his British heritage shows through many times even though he completely ignores Englishman Frank Whittle, inventor of the Allie's jet engine. While Hobart's flail tank was important, the USA sergeant who created the rhino tank won the day in terms of cutting through the bogage and getting the invading armies off the beach. Once off the beach, the Red Ball Express and their Duce-and-a-Half trucks did noble service thanks, in part, to the black drivers who receive no mention. The USA's ability to repair these trucks and have tank retrievers and repair depots is one thing that separated our mechanized forces from the Germans who could not repair their disabled tanks and used horses to an unappreciated extent. The flame-thrower tank really was the most effective weapon for winkling out the Japanese in the Pacific, and he completely neglects Harvard's role in inventing napalm both for the flamethrower devices and the instruments of Japan's "rain of ruin" from the B-29s. Generally, Harvard has chosen NOT to highlight its contributions in this matter. Kennedy might have mentioned how Churchill had a blind spot in the matter of "The Prof" {Lindeman} who took the English down a number of technical blind alleys. For instance, Englishman Bernard Lovell developed the H2S radar for target location and, at last, precision night bombing—after having to beat back Lindeman's quack science and going directly to Churchill to get a commitment to its rapid development in quantity. This radar was the first which gave accurate radar scope images of the ground and thus allowed for accurate bombing late in the war for all-weather and night situations. R.V. Jones is another example and he had the fortitude to attend cabinet meetings and confront Lindeman during the "battle of the beams" phase of The Blitz. Churchill was foolishly loyal to Lindeman but enjoyed seeing his discomfort and sided with the young upstarts from academe. The British gave such characters the nickname: boffins.This book is really for the initiated. He covers significant items in a throwaway sentence or two which may be enough for the cognoscenti but will hardly due for substance. He actually gives a fair amount of space to the torpedo problem but fails to mention the advent of Western Electric's electric torpedo and the willingness of submarine commanders to ignore torpedo orders which came from the Freemantle command {headed by the stubborn Admiral Christie who earlier commanded the Newport Station which developed the duds.} He never mentions Vice Admiral Lockwood's stunning feat of sending the USN submarines on 10,000-mile patrols. Who developed their diesel engines and who designed those boats with a Japanese war in mind {and therefore with air conditioning and powerful engines and room for an appropriate-size crew}? The submarine service's reputation for its good chow was done on the back of their refrigeration units.There is only a one-phrase mention of George Marshall's weeding out the Army's incompetent leaders, but Lockwood did it on a mass scale with the early submarine commanders he inherited. In only one sentence does he mention that the submarine forces destroyed the Japanese economy by depriving it of needed materiel. I think he does acknowledge that the Allies did to Japan what the Nazi's failed to do to the Allies in regard to submarine warfare. If ever there was a man-from-the-middle-ranks it was Cmdr. Joseph Rochefort who convinced Nimitz that Midway was the target he should set up for his ambush. Even though he was berthed in Pearl Harbor, Rochefort only met face-to-face twice with Nimitz to preserve his objectivity. He worked almost entirely through his agents on Nimitz's staff. The second meeting Nimitz had with Rochefort was to interrogate him on why he thought {despite Washington's constant carping} that Midway was the goal.MIT's radiation lab is, again, a toss away item. How did the Tizard mission come into being and which brought the cavity magnetron to the U.S.? Why was ULTRA held back until much later? Alfred Loomis's role in organizing the radar effort is a great example of Kennedy's point about the spirit of innovation. Loomis may have been a rich snob {Tuxedo Park was his development}, but he was tremendously effective in organizing the development of US radar and then selling it to Henry Stimson. He even managed to develop Loran which became a key Allied navigational aide which has been superseded only recently. One of its towers still stands on Nantucket. Surely the men-in-the-middle engineers did wonders in jump starting the U.S. aircraft industry and tank arsenals on an enormous scale in an amazingly-short time. This was both a design coup and a production feat. If ever there was an engineering project it was the Manhattan Project, but like the other items just mentioned: No or little mention. How the USA managed to organize war production and herd U.S. businessmen into cooperation would seem to be major grist for his mill, especially given the author’s introduction.One meaty and additional chapter could have done justice to almost all these quibbles. I think a somewhat labored read could have been turned into a thrilling reading experience if Kennedy had taken the time to do an additional chapter and mine the gold that the reader deserves. I believe Kennedy appears to lack the background and appreciation for such a chapter and, perhaps, a co-author would have furthered his cause immensely.

This book was a disappointment to me. I was looking for a book that would delve into topics like the use of operations research, the strategic bombing campaign survey, and the USAAF team in the Pacific that would result in the Whiz Kids of the 60's. Kennedy groups a series of Allied innovations around a group of challenges, such as winning the war in the Atlantic, storming an enemy held shore, and solving the challenge of distance in the Pacific. I think it's an interesting way to look at the war, but I think his discussion is often superficial and lacks depth. The chapters feel like a set of anecdotes strung together, and the analysis of impact and events is often oversimplified. It's an okay book, but I expected much more.
