About the Author

Titus Livius (59 BC-AD 17) began working on his History of Rome at the age of 30 and continued for over 40 years until his death. The history ran to 142 books, of which 35 survive.Betty Radice (1912-1985) read classics at Oxford, then married and, in the intervals of bringing up a family, tutored in classics, philosophy and English. She became joint editor of the Penguin Classics in 1964. As well as editing the translation of Livy’s The War with Hannibal she translated Livy’s Rome and Italy, Pliny’s Letters, The Letters of Abelard and Heloise and Erasmus’s Praise of Folly, and also wrote the introduction to Horace’s Complete Odes and Epodes, all for the Penguin Classics. She also edited Edward Gibbon’s Memoirs of My Life for the Penguin English Library, and edited and annotated her translation of the younger Pliny’s works for the Loeb Library of Classics and translated from Renaissance Latin, Greek and Italian for the Officina Bodoni of Verona. She collaborated as a translator in the Collected Works of Erasmus, and was the author of the Penguin Reference Book Who’s Who in the Ancient World. Radice was an honorary fellow of St Hilda’s College, Oxford, and a vice-president of the Classical Association.

This is a good translation of a history book that through being a history book written a millennium or two ago is now considered stodgy. It is not. My purchase dealt with the war with Carthage, which is a fascinating period of history. Livy chronicles the war rather well in a year-by-year fashion. The end of each chapter has a section recounting 'fabulous' things that have happened, rather like the scandal sheets you see by the grocery store checkout lines. My advice to anyone considering buying this is to keep in mind what all good students of classical literature and history are told from the start: if you hit a difficult part, skip it. You can always go back. Since you are not likely reading this particular book for a grade, it's the best way to be. Now excuse me: I need to get back to Tiberius Gracchus and his army of misfits that marched into legend for a while...

Of course this is not the definitive history of the war, but it reads easily and well (a fine translation), and puts some interesting slants on that 15 year struggle. For example, that the elephants were almost as dangerous to the Carthaginians as to the Romans, that their chief tactical advantage lay in frightening the horses of the Roman cavalry, that in many of the contested towns the elites were pro-Rome, the people pro-Carthage (shades of American interventions in Asia and the Near East!), that Hannibal's real trump was his Numidian cavalry, which he deployed brilliantly time after time, and so on. In short, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read and, for me, had many, many resonances with modern conflicts.

I wont add anything to the comments about the work itself.It is good to see more classics in the Kindle format, but Penguin needs to put in more effort when releasing these old works in the new format. Most of the issues relate to utlising the format to its maximum potential.i. Although there is an interactive table of contents, it isn't listed when the reader selects the 'Go To' option, forcing the reader to select either 'Cover' and scroll forward or the 'Beginning' option and scroll back.ii. The notes should have interactive links in them where the note is referencing another part of the book, especially where the reference is a page number. This chronological index has interactive links which is fantastic.iii. There are many formatting errors which I do not recall in the print original. These include incorrect spacing between full stops and the next sentence, new sections that begin in the middle of paragraphs, minor spelling errors (correctly spelled but incorrectly chosen words) to name a few.iv. Worst of all, the maps are not present, so the interactive links lead to the section following where they should be. The maps are essential for most readers to understand the action being narrated in the book.

Book was a different edition than one shown and was in much worse condition than described.

I'm a fan of the underdog. This story is told mostly from roman perspective which is understandable considering Hannibal status as public enemy number one. With all of history being written by the victors expect the story to have all the similarities of all Roman victories over their barbarians. The author does a fantastic job considering what he had to work with.

the story of hannibal has fascinated me since I was a young boy.I have never found a book that told the story in such an interesting way and one that was so enjoyable to read.The story comes alive and I could almost hear the elephants stomp past me in their epic march.I would recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in this classic era of history.It causes me to stop and wonder what if Carthage had beaten Rome?

The book is amazing. It describes amazing battles and sieges during second punic war. Massive armies of Romans and Carthaginians. Second punic war was the greatest war in ancient times. Both powers were at its peak and could mobilised more then 500 000 solders. There are great commanders on both sides such as Fabius, Marcelus, Sempronius and Scipio on Roman and Hannibal, Hasdrubal and Hanno on Carthaginian side.There are many details in book and every year is described on about 50 pages. It has maps and notes and takes time to read.The book is realy exciting.
