About the Author
Kirk Werner never set out to become a children's book author. While he has always enjoyed writing, it is his love of flyfishing and illustrating that led him to create the story of Olive the Woolly Bugger. He is a homegrown product of Washington state, where he lives with his wife and two kids and one itchy dog. He has more stories planned for Olive the Woolly Bugger so stay tuned.

This is the third book of the Olive series. We purchased the first two when my twin boys received their first fly rods at age six - they have been a bed time staple ever since. The books teach about fishing, respect for the environment, family and friendship in a story that is captivating for both children and parents. Now that my boys are 8 1/2 and entering third grade they enthusiatically read the Olive books on their own.The stories are great and I expect that they would be enjoyed by any children interested in nature and outdoor adventures. But if you child has been exposed to fly fishing these are an absolute must for your library.I hope to see a fourth Olive book - we love them.
I can't wait till my nephew - he turns 2 this year! - get's old enough for these books!
This book series is darling and educational. They are too advanced for my two year old but she still loves the pictures and listening to me read. These are my favorite books!
Teaches kids life lessons and all about the great outdoors. Great introduction to the sport of flyfishing. My kids loved it.
This series of books is great. The niece & nephew I bought them for are arguing over who gets to go fishing with me first.
In the technology age we live in, we've all heard how important it is to teach children to get up and get outside. There are many ways to pass along the love of the outdoors and one is this wonderful series of children's books by Kirk Werner. Whether you have a family lured by the appeal of flyfishing or not, this series of books will get young readers hooked on the outdoors and reading.In the third book of the series, Olive Goes for a Wild Ride (Olive Flyfishing), Olive does just that. Since graduating from Camp Tightloops, Olive and the new flies have fished many different places, but this time, Olive gets snagged on a log and her line breaks. Fortunately for Olive, she snags a new friend, Clark, the small fry with a big heart that will help Olive find her way home back to the Fly Box. This is almost a nonfiction book in disguise as this delightful story teaches young readers about steelhead trout, spawning salmon, nymphs, and many other creatures under the sea.These books are truly unique in that they introduce young readers to the sport of flyfishing in an entertaining way. As somebody with no experience or interest in flyfishing, I found these books fun to read, educational, and entertaining. The bright and colorful illustrations are amazing and so much fun to view. How many books have you seen where the characters are lures? There's more text in these stories than most picture books, which makes them suitable for ages 6 and up, but the eye-catching illustrations will appeal to children of all ages. So grab a line and reel in this series that will get your young readers loving the outdoors and the art of flyfishing.
Having previously reviewed his first and second books, I knew that Kirk Werner had to do something special to maintain the same high level of awesomeness. He did.Olive is, for anyone unfamiliar with the first two books, a woolly bugger. The author-illustrator's skill at drawing fishing flies who can emote is impressive. (Whether or not they can molt is another question altogether!)Olive Goes for a Wild Ride is the final entry in the Olive series*, at least for now. Even if Kirk's dreams of seeing Olive on the big screen do not materialize, I hope we will see more of his hooked heroine in future books. Symbolically, he has ended this series by illustrating (both literally and figuratively) the circle of life.Olive's task here is aided by the hugely likable form of Clark, the small fry. Olive's fly friends play a much smaller role in this book, perhaps emphasizing the maturing process as Olive gets older and begins to rely more on herself. Olive Goes for a Wild Ride is by far the scariest of all three books. Where the first addressed anxiety in a new school setting, and the second challenged the flies to catch real fish for the first time, this adventure has Olive lost at sea, or at least a river. Rest assured: all is well in the end. Still, I might suggest parents read through initially to best anticipate the story arc. You may also want to prepare your child for the inevitable questions that will follow. This book addresses some very real emotions and topics, even death. If your child is too young for such conversations, you could always enjoy the first two Olive books for now and save the third for when they are a little older."But don't be sad--that's just the way life is."
