"Importantly, the text, illustrations and features such as text Boxes are written and presented in such a stimulating way as to represent an appealing outline of entomology to undergraduates, amateurs, or specialists in related fields including conservation, and the book comes with a high recommendation ." From the Back Cover

This established, popular textbook provides a stimulating and comprehensive introduction to the insects, the animals that represent over half of the planet's biological diversity. In this new fourth edition, the authors introduce the key features of insect structure, function, behavior, ecology and classification, placed within the latest ideas on insect evolution. Much of the book is organised around major biological themes - living on the ground, in water, on plants, in colonies, and as predators, parasites/parasitoids and prey. A strong evolutionary theme is maintained throughout. The ever-growing economic importance of insects is emphasized in new boxes on insect pests, and in chapters on medical and veterinary entomology, and pest management. Updated 'taxoboxes' provide concise information on all aspects of each of the 27 major groupings (orders) of insects. The authors maintain the tradition of clarity and conciseness set by earlier editions, and the text is illustrated profusely with specially commissioned hand-drawn figures. The illustrations and the informative text aim to encourage the scientific study of insects, either as a vocation or as a hobby. The book is intended as the principal text for students studying entomology, as well as a reference text for undergraduate and graduate courses in fields of ecology, agriculture, fisheries and forestry, palaeontology, zoology, and medical and veterinary science.

This books gives a very good overview of entomology. It covers not only the orders of insects, but includes aspects of entomological interest such as insect physiology, ecology, evolution, and pest control. Readability is good. My estimate of the ideal target audience is undergraduate biology majors but could be used as a reference text for entomology graduate students. My gripes with the Kindle Edition of this book is as follows:(1) The "color" plates are in black and white.(2) The optical scan that was used to convert the written text to e-text left a frustratingly large number of words and numbers with incorrect spacing, giving me some difficulties at times with what it was the authors were saying.(3) It also left a great many hyphens in words that on my e-reader display did not need a hyphen in that place.

This textbook was reccomended to me by a friend who said it was a great starting place into entomology. It has helped me understand important principles in a very clear and concise manner. My interest in this subject is only recreational, but even still this book introduces the scientific terms in a manner that is entry level, and then progresses that knowledge as you procede through into the more specific areas of knowledge. This book covers a wide variety of insects and breaks them down according to their lifestyles making it easy for someone like me to access the knowledge within it's covers. This book also discusses the many uses for entomology, beyond that of identification of insects. It shows you the applications of the knowledge you are gaining, and that is very important I think. This book and a field guide is all you need to really get a working understanding of entomology and its uses as a science. This book gives you the theory behind the insects and why they are the way they are and is an excellent purchase even for me, the hobbyist.

This book is great if you have just started learning about bugs. It provides very in depth descriptions on behavior, external anatomy, internal anatomy, and classification. However, I would not suggest this book to those who are looking for a book to learn about bugs as well as identify them. To those who are looking for such a book, I would recommend getting this, to learn the basics about bugs, but I suggest you buy the Audubon insect guide to insects and spiders. Most entomologists in my college use this book for the first two months, but for the rest of the year ( when I teach identification) I use the Audubon.

Super cool book. I recently became interested in entomology and this has aided my addiction. I find myself reading it and flipping through its pages for enjoyment... sounds weird but it's true. I am now preparing to start my first semester as a graduate student in entomology with this book at my side.

This is a great introduction to insect biology and is written in a clear and concise manner. The chapters are intuitively laid out and in addition to being a great resource, this is actually a very interesting book to just sit down and read. I bought this book for an entomology course I was taking and I will treasure it in years to come.

Phenomenal

The book explains what you need to know in a very understandable way. It also gives information on preserving insects and identifying them if you will be collecting!

This book combined with a class on different insects and arachnids made the learning experience real and I plan to keep the textbook from here on out as a reference to the information leaned in the class. The Insects is a great supplement to a class but even for independent study it is effective and informative.
