I generally like Falcon's Best Easy Day Hike series. These books feature pleasant hikes ranging from 1/2 mile to 5 miles and include nice sketch maps and decent directions to the trailhead. Suzanne Swedo's contribution covering Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular, if for no other reason than the popularity of Yosemite itself. It features numerous short hikes that can enhance any visit to the park.This product also features the National Geographic "Trails Illustrated" topographical map to Yosemite. This particular product is a huge fold out map that is enormously detailed. It is useful for trip planning, but you might be better served by a Tom Harrison map if you are actually on the trail since the bulk can make it difficult to navigate with (constant folding and unfolding.) Still, this is also a quality product.The problem is, these two products do not necessarily go together. Most of the hikes in Swedo's book are featured on the map, but since the map covers the whole park, these short walks really do not receive the detail that the sketch maps in the book alone offer. Bottom line: Best Easy Day Hikes, Yosemite is good for planning stops on your two or three day drive vacation through Yosemite. The map is better for planning long backpack trips. The two products do not necessarily go together, though if you enjoy both sorts of visits to Yosemite as I do, you can save money by buying this combination in one product.

The "Best East Day Hiking Guide" book in this bundle is pretty lame. It doesn't give detailed descriptions of the hikes or give any insight to excite or dissuade or make decision as to which hike might really be best for my family to choose in our limited time at Yosemite. The maps a very basic trail maps, and the small book means even smaller maps. The companion National Geographic map, however, is a great, must-have map for visiting the National Park, giving good topography, road, trail, and sight-seeing landmarks (I have used a similar NG map in Joshua Tree NP). It is high-quality plastic-coated paper that is easy to unfold, fold, can get wet, tear-resistant, and has good detail for the scale. One side covers the northern half of the park while the other side covers the south. The only drawback is it really only covers the park boundaries; it won't help you navigate outside the Park, only within. I highly recommend the map, and you can purchase it as a stand-alone item. Skip the bundle and the book, and go online to Yosemite National Park at the NPS website to check out the hiking trails, as you will get better info, for free.

This book was handy for information on hikes and trails that were less strenuous. The more challenging hikes are not even mentioned in this book, though, which was a letdown. A list of all available hikes and trails would have been convenient in case I wanted to research them further somewhere else. It definitely fits its title and will not lead you astray.
Planning a trip to Yosemite, this will prove helpful.
