About the Author

Caren Cooper is an associate professor of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program in Leadership in Public Science, and assistant head of the Biodiversity Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. She studies bird ecology, conservation, and management through the use of citizen science. She served as an advisor to the public television documentary mini-series The Crowd & The Cloud. The book "Citizen Science" exceeded my expectations by providing a plethora of examples of how citizen advocates in the realm of science can contribute to meaningful science research. Cooper explores how an ordinary citizen who is interested in human health, environmental health, or cosmic understanding can actively get involved in real science. This book is written so that anyone who has ever been interested in being a scientist could actually feel empowered by their contributions to the scientific world.

An excellent job in highlighting a modern scientific approach and one that can only get more attention as the Baby boomers start retiring.

An excellent introduction to the people and methods involved with citizen science. Highly recommended!

As a non-scientist, I found Cooper's book not just understandable but fascinating. She includes inspiring examples of citizen science and its impact in a wide range of scientific fields, explaining the citizen practitioners' motivation to get involved and the rewards that keep them committed.to their work. At a time when scientific findings are under attack from politically-motivated regressive forces, it's especially important to promote public engagement in, and commitment to, reality-based findings. Cooper's book will encourage the spread of such activities.

The democratic transactions many of us hold dear are evidently under assault. "What can I do?" is our frequent refrain. The good news is, we have amazing tools -- free, widely accessible -- for constructing not only our own meaning, but for getting the data to support our goals in local, regional, state, and federal contexts.
