I bought this book because it was recommended for my daughter's homeschool curriculum, and it wasn't available at our local library. I had no idea how much our family was going to enjoy this charming story. The intrepid protagonist wants to bake an apple pie, but the market is closed. So she sets off a journey around the world to gather all the best quality ingredients for the perfect apple pie. The illustrations are charming and contain a wealth of details to be noticed in numerous re-readings. The story is told both well and simply, and the twist on the last page is the stuff great picture books are made of.The recipe for apple pie at the end of the book is simple and delicious, and it makes use of all the ingredients gathered in the story.We used the story for a mapping lesson as well charted the protagonist's journey on our world map on the wall. We used it for a cooking lesson. We used it for a science lesson (how are sugar and butter made, and how is salt retrieved from sea water.) We used it to have fun story time together, and that was the best of all.Now I am glad the library didn't have it. Having purchased it, I anticipate my family enjoying it for years to come.
We bought his book because it was suggested in our kindergarten curriculum, and I'm so glad we did!!! It is adorable and fun and we were able to pull out our map and try to locate the different places they traveled. We then made Apple pie from the recipe in the back of the book.
Our daughter homeschools and for kindergarten/first grade she uses "Five in a Row" curriculum. This is one of the books in that curricula - and they read it every school day for 5 days and then do an acitivity that goes along with it. This one tells you where you go around the world to find the ingredients - so you have geography lessons, reading lessons, math lessons with the ingredients - and can even make the pie as a project! Great book for 4-6 year olds.
This book will be used as the storyline for a class play. We will sing a folk song from the countries that are mentioned in the story. The program will be presented to the student body and parents. It is an AR point, which means the students will have an opportunity to earn points for reading this book.
A delightful picture book for children ages 3 to 8 yrs. -- Even includes a good basic recipe for apple pie!My three year old grandson loves this book and he also loves to make apple pie -- next we'll have to see the world together--maybe starting next year!
Lovely book! I read it to my kindergarten class and they loved knowing where different things came from. It was an excellent introduction to food coming from different places and to how big the world really was.
This is a great story, and not for kids alone! My husband and I like this story (and the others by the same author) just as much as the kids like it! It is whimsically well written, and the illustrations are fantastic! This book has been read so many times, we are on our third copy of the book! HIghly recommended, this is a family favorite, and we dearly love our books!
This was a fun book to share with my children. We were able to discuss the different countries that the baker visits, and recall the ingredients needed to make an apple pie. A delightful book!
