This is a historical dance reference book, a scholarly work, difficult to follow for non-professional.

Extremely well researched and well written. Brissenden's treatise exudes not simply expertise in Shakespearean drama and Elizabethan dance, but his work overflows with his love of the topics. His analyses are crisp and concise. This work could easily be used as a textbook example in Shakespeare's use of metaphor as a vehicle to develop a bond between the actors and the daily lives of their audience. Brissenden has accomplished much the same in his presentation in this work. The references to period resources and appendices alone are worth the cost of the book. Very, very highly recommended.

"Shakespeare and the Dance" is the only book that has been published on this subject. Brissenden analyzes almost every reference to dance in Shakespeare's plays, and makes a strong argument for dance's important role. However, there is no information on how to do dances like the galliard or the volta nor are there suggestions for how to adapt them for contemporary productions. While this is a good resource to launch your research, if you're choreographing for a Shakespeare play, you're better off with Thoinot Arbeau's "Orchesography".
